SaskPower program returns, saving customers over $100 a year

SaskPower's Refrigerator Recycling Program returns today and that means you can once again save over $100 per year on your power bill by recycling your old, inefficient fridges and freezers.

SaskPower's Refrigerator Recycling Program returns today and that means you can once again save over $100 per year on your power bill by recycling your old, inefficient fridges and freezers.

"Energy efficiency programs are a key part of SaskPower's plan to ensure Saskatchewan continues to have an affordable and sustainable supply of electricity," said Rob Norris, Minister responsible for SaskPower. "In addition to energy savings, this program will help protect the environment by ensuring the old fridges are recycled responsibly."

The Refrigerator Recycling Program recycled 6,500 fridges and freezers across Saskatchewan in

2011 and SaskPower has once again partnered with JACO EcoSolutions Canada to manage this year's collection and recycling.

The program offers you free pick up and recycling of your old inefficient fridges and freezers, as well as providing you with an additional $50 per appliance for participating.

"Customers often ask why SaskPower would encourage people to use less of our product," said

Robert Watson, President and CEO, SaskPower. "Energy efficiency programs like this one cost less than adding new generation sources. Giving our customers an incentive to save power not only helps lower their power bills, but it also helps us to protect the environment."

Anyone who wants to participate this year is encouraged to call early as the program is once again expected to fill up quickly; 9,000 fridges are expected to be collected this year. To qualify, fridges must be at least 15 years or older; in working condition; between 10 and 25 cubic feet (no commercial or compact refrigerators) and be located at a primary residence within

Saskatchewan. Freezers are also included in the program, as long as a refrigerator is picked up at the same time. Freezers do not have an age or size restriction, but they must be in working order.

There is a maximum of four units (fridges or freezers) per household.

People interested in participating can visit www.saskpower.com or call 1-877-SKRECYCLE (1-877-757-3292) to find out if their fridge or freezer qualifies and to arrange for a pick-up.
