Souris River Snowmobilers hold tribute ride for former member

WEYBURN – Members of the Souris River Snowmobiling Club gathered on Saturday to hold a tribute ride for a longtime former member, Gordon Tonn, who passed away on Jan. 7.

The funeral service for Tonn was held on Friday, and the Snowmobiling Club wanted to remember him with a ride on their trails, starting out from Weyburn, gathering by Highway 13 near Pumpjacks on the eastern edge of the city.

A fellow club member, Laurie Norman, said he used to go for snowmobile rides with Gordon and Janette from their farm east of Weyburn, and would ride to Griffin, Creelman and Fillmore sometimes through swamp bottoms where they would often see moose.

They dubbed the rides as the “moose run”, said Norman, so they were calling this ride the “Gordon Tonn Memorial Moose Run” in his honour.

Janette came by before the start of the ride, and hugged and thanked many of the members for this tribute. Gordon’s nephew rode Gordon’s sled in the lead of the ride.

The group headed east to Griffin and stopped at the club’s warmup shack, then headed out to Creelman and stopped for lunch in Fillmore before heading back to Weyburn.
