Two Weyburn Comp School teams take in Business Case competition

Two teams took part in the Campbell Business Case competition, and one took second place in personal finance.

WEYBURN – Two teams of students and Weyburn Comprehensive business teacher Margot Arnold travelled to the University of Regina on Feb. 17 to take part in the Campbell Business High School Case Competition.

The Personal Finance team competed and won second out of nine Personal Finance Teams competing.

The team included students George Hoffman, Dalton Molnar and Nikola Erasmus.

The other team that took part in the competition included Maddie Gerry, Josee Hutt and Ella Leko.

The day began with greetings from the Dean of the Paul J. Hill Business School, and from WESK, one of the SBTA Diamond Sponsors.

For the Case Competition, each team received the same case study with either a personal finance or entrepreneurship problem in the case study to solve. The teams then had three hours to prepare their presentation for the judges.

The steps for deconstructing a case included the following:

  1. Problem Identification [Primary and Secondary issues(s)]
  2. Analysis (External and Internal using SWOT Analysis)
  3. Decision Criteria Matrix
  4. Alternatives (Three Alternatives:  Status Quo, Alternative 1 and Alternative 2— select the best and analyze fully)
  5. Recommendation of best alternative
  6. Implementation (Logistics, Timeline, Finances)
  7. Risks and Mitigations
  8. Questions and Answers from the Judges

After three hours, each team presented to the local judges (including businesspeople from the community who volunteer their time), and each team is scored on the content in their presentation, in addition to their presentation, skills and ability to think on their feet with judge’s questions.

The judge’s marks are tallied and the top two in each category, Personal Finance (nine teams) and Entrepreneurship (nine teams) present to the judges again for first and second place in each.

Arnold noted she will be attending the 10th Annual SBTA Case Competition and Teacher Conference on May 4-5 at the U of R, and she will be taking three teams with her.

Two of the teams will compete and one will get their feet wet with the Case Study Deconstruction Process.

There are scholarships available from U of R and U of S for first and second place finishers in the Case Study Competition.
