ESTEVAN - Members of the Estevan Police Service have made an arrest after a brief armed standoff on Friday.

Police were alerted to a residence in the 1300-block of Eighth Street around 10:30 a.m., which lead to an armed standoff with a barricaded person and a potential hostage.

The Weyburn and Estevan Joint Tactical Support Team, along with crisis negotiators and extra patrol members, were called in for support. At one point, the EPS says weapons were drawn.

Following a brief period of negotiations with the suspect, he gave himself up without further incident. An elderly subject known to the suspect was in the residence and was unharmed.

The suspect remains in custody and the investigation into the matter remains ongoing. There is no risk to public safety at this time.

There was no traffic allowed in the 1300-block of Seventh and Eighth Streets, as well as the back alley between the two roads. The public was asked to avoid the area.

The Mercury will have more details as they become available.
