UPDATE: Weyburn fire fighters respond to fire call

Cooking fire causes damages in Weyburn home

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Fire Department was dispatched to reports of a kitchen fire in the 200 block of Third Street South on Friday evening around 6:43 p.m.

One engine, rescue, aerial apparatus, and a command truck responded to the scene. The first arriving officer on the scene reported visible flames through the kitchen window.

A fire extinguisher was used to knock down the flames from the entrance door. Crews arrived on the scene, checked for fire extension, performed an overhaul, and ventilated the home.

Weyburn Police assisted the occupant and children with temporary shelter. There were no reported injuries. Damages are estimated at around $3,000.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires in North America. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more than 150,000 home fires involve cooking equipment each year. These fires result in hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries and hundreds of millions in direct property damage annually.

Weyburn Fire Department would like to help people prevent these fires, injuries and losses and reduce the number of cooking fires in the city of Weyburn.
