Every Canadian lining to vote in the upcoming federal election on Monday, May 2, must have identification to vote.

This is the message from Canada's Chief Electoral Officer, Marc Mayrand.

"All electors must prove their identity and address when they vote or register to vote at federal elections, byelections and referendums," said Mayrand.

Election officers will require every voter to provide either one original government-issued photo ID that includes the name and address of the voter, such as a driver's licence, or two authorized original pieces of identification, both containing the name and one also showing one's address, such as a health card or a utility bill.

"I urge electors to bring sufficient identification to the polls so they can vote quickly and easily," said Mayrand.

Electors can vote without identification by having another registered voter who has the required identification vouch for them. Both electors would be required to take an oath or an affirmation.

More information on ID rules is available at the www.elections.ca website.
