Weyburn City Hall lights up in Ukraine’s colours

City Hall is bathed in blue and yellow lights in solidarity with Ukraine

WEYBURN – The City of Weyburn is lighting up in solidarity with Ukraine, by bathing the front of City Hall in the blue and yellow colours of their national flag.

Mayor Marcel Roy said the colours will be in place for an undetermined length of time, due to the uncertain nature of the invasion by Russia, which began on Feb. 24.

Coun. Mel Van Betuw noted residents have the opportunity to donate to organizations like the Red Cross to support relief efforts, and pointed out the federal government will match these donations dollar-for-dollar.

He also said many poorer countries in the area are taking refugees who are fleeing from Ukraine, such as Poland.

“We are so fortunate, we don’t have to dodge bullets,” he added.

Mayor Roy added that the city will take part in any projects or programs coordinated by the provincial government, such as by taking in Ukrainian immigrants.

The province has indicated to the federal government that Saskatchewan has opened their doors to any Ukrainians who wish to settle in a new life here.
