In Weyburn's Centennial year, Mayor Debra Button says her personal highlight was ringing the bell.
"Being able to ring the bell was a personal highlight for me. Special thanks to the Myrglod family for that," said Button.
The plan for the bell is to house in something constructed with the bricks from the Collegiate building being demolished this month, and place it near the Soo Line Historical Museum.
Button says the City of Weyburn was very busy economically and developmentally.
"This is a first for outside developers and it's been a huge success story," said Button. "We have been struggling to fill an engineering role and given we don't have an engineer, this has been great for us."
Personally, Button said being elected Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association president early in February last year was another highlight.
"I've been busy learning my role. It reminds me a lot of what it's like to be a new counsellor," said Button.
She is the first woman to be elected president and the fourth to come out of Weyburn. Button said she is reminded of a quote her Jamaican friend once said, "If you want good, your nose has to run."
"It's just so true. I've been busy, but I thoroughly enjoy the role."
Serving as SUMA president is beneficial on the provincial and federal levels. Being able to meet with elected officials on those levels is good for the city.
"I appreciate the ability I've been given."
Early in the year, The City of Weyburn entered into contract negotiations with the Weyburn Police Service and coming to an agreement that both sides was happy with, was another highlight on the mayor's reel.
"I was so nice to see that wrap up," she said.
October 1 was the first full year for this council. The City of Weyburn's four veterans and two new comers are getting comfortable in their roles with a few changes coming in the next year.
The City of Weyburn is working with the Rural Municipality of Weyburn on planning and the document will be signed soon.
"This year has been very successful," said Button, adding the city plans to continue to work on attracting retail markets in the New Year.
