Huge grass fire fought on land southeast of Halbrite

WEYBURN – Volunteer fire fighters from two fire departments, plus a number of area farmers and oilfield workers, combined their efforts to fight a large grass fire on April 10 southeast of Halbrite.

The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce named the late Ron Fellner as the posthumous recipient of the Golden Spike Award for 2021, which was accepted by his wife Lorraine, during a zoom presentation of the chamber’s annual meeting on March 31.

The Weyburn Soccer Association was announced as the Member Organization of the Year, during the Saskatchewan Soccer Association virtual awards, held live on Facebook on March 31.

Saskatchewan’s first cube satellite is tentatively set to head to space in late 2022, and Weyburn student Arliss Sidloski has an integral role in helping get it there as a member of the University of Saskachewan’s Space Design team, she told the Weyburn Rotary Club.

The Saskatchewan provincial budget, tabled by Minister of Finance Donna Harpauer on April 6, had a forecast deficit of $2.6 billion for 2021; the  budget included $1.4 million for the planning of replacement of the Weyburn General Hospital.

The first Canadian Kennel Club event in 30 years was held in Weyburn at Fido’s Place doggy daycare on April 18.

Weyburn curler Ken Kopeck won a $10,000 renovation grant for the Weyburn Curling Club from entering Curling Canada’s Curling Day in Canada event in February –The Weyburn Golf Course was in a much stronger financial position heading into the 2021 season than they were in 2020, in spite of the challenges of operating under COVID restrictions.

Weyburn lawyer Stephen Schuck took over Don Horner’s law firm, and began setting up his new law practice on April 7.

The SCMA revealed its annual award winners during a virtual ceremony Saturday night, with Tenille Arts named Female Artist of the Year, and winning for Album or EP of the Year for Love, Heartbreak & Everything in Between; Single of the Year for Somebody Like That, and she shared the Songwriter of the Year Award with Allison Veltz Cruz and Alex Kline.

Ogema Mayor Carol Peterson affirmed in an interview that town council has decided not to rebuild the historic fire wall, built in 1915, after a wind storm knocked it down in January.
