A 62-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a truck while attempting to cross the street Monday morning.

According to information from the Estevan Police Service, officers received a 911 call at 8:50 a.m. informing them that a pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Souris Avenue and Third Street.

EPS members and Estevan RCMP officers, as well as EMT personnel, quickly responded to the scene and discovered a woman in distress. She was eventually transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where she passed away from her injuries.

The deceased was identified as Karen L. Hancock.

EPS stated that the incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Word of the accident quickly spread throughout Estevan Monday and was also a topic at city council where pedestrian safety and speed limits within Estevan have been hotly debated over the past few years.

Councillor Lynn Chipley said while the news was tragic, she felt it was only "a matter of time" before a pedestrian was killed.

"Speed is an issue in this town," said Chipley. "I'm a walker and a runner and I end up running in the leisure centre pretty well all of the time because it's just not safe on our streets and that is really, really sad."

Chipley also pleaded with motorists in the city to slow down and respect pedestrians.
