Weyburn Red Wings move ahead with a new coach-GM

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings moved forward without head coach and general manager Rich Pilon, team president Brent Stephanson said in a brief statement on Aug. 3, with assistant coach Cody Mapes named as the new head coach and general manager.

NFL centre and Weyburn product Brett Jones was signed by the Denver Broncos, after three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

The reigning Miss Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Queen, Ember Schira of Weyburn, contended for the crown of Rodeo Queen at the National High School Rodeo in Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as competing in the barrel-racing event.

Golfer Rick Hallberg won the senior men’s provincial championship on July 27-29 in Warman, then on the Aug. 1 weekend, he won the senior men’s event at the FrameTech Classic, contested at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course in Estevan.

‘Sharing Kailynn’s Sunshine’ Foundation held a ‘20 for 20’ campaign in honour of what would have been Kailynn Bursic-Panchuk’s 20th birthday on Aug. 21.

The Pangman Museum held a ribbon-cutting on Aug. 7 to officially open its new displays in three dioramas, along with a brand-burning held prior to the ceremony, and a supper afterwards.

Weyburn pickleball player Deana Mainil teamed up with her sister, Angie Chatlain, to compete in the Pickleball Canada National Championships, held Aug. 10-15 in Red Deer, Alta., and came away with a bronze medal.

One of Canada’s newest senators, David Arnot, had a brief connection to Weyburn when his family lived in the city during the 1960s; he moved to Weyburn with his family in 1963, when David’s father Jerry bought the Mercury Meteor dealership, and ran Arnot Mercury on Railway Avenue from 1963 to 1969.

A park with play equipment was opened on Aug. 14 in Trossachs, a long-time project of the Brokenshell Parks and Rec committee.

The federal election call on Aug. 15 came as no surprise to Dr. Robert Kitchen, the incumbent Conservative MP for Souris-Moose Mountain, and with a short campaign, he had his plans and people in place for hitting the campaign trail.

A recent survey named Canada as the 10th friendliest country in the world, and Weyburn is one of the friendliest places in Saskatchewan, placed among the top 19 of the friendliest small towns in the country.

A Weyburn family business, Jerry Mainil Limited, celebrated its sixth decade of operation with a community event on Aug. 28 at River Park.
