Yellow Grass School raises money for AIDS research

Yellow Grass (cpd) - The Grade 7 and 8 classes along with their teacher, Ms. Thiele, raised $315.50 for CANFAR (Canadian Federation for AIDS Research). They made the money over a week of activities such as guessing how many candies were in a jar, making and selling ribbon cookies, beach ball tournaments, and 'wear your hat for a buck' day.

Hot lunch was sold at the school on Thursday and was sponsored by the junior girls volleyball team. Also on March 8, an one-hour presentation on cyber-bullynig was given by Brain Trainor to students from Grades 5-12. The presentation was sponsored by the Southeast Cornerstone School Division and will be held division wide. The Weyburn Credit Union also donated two books to the school "Bully 4 U."

No classes were held on March 12 because of a staff development day. Report cards went out on Friday, March 16. The parent, teacher, student three-way conferences will be held today, Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday March 22 after school on both days. No classes will be held on Friday, March 23.

The kindergarten and Grades 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 classes have been busy with artwork to help compliment the decor for the Book Fair luau theme. Students, staff, parents and the general public are all welcome to attend the Yellow Grass School Book Fair on Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the School Resource Centre.

Anyone who would like to donate cookies toward the weekly "King's Club" could leave the cookies in the United Church kitchen. Helpers are also needed. The club meets every Monday following school, 3:30 p.m., and the children, aged 3-12, participating enjoy a craft, stories, a game, and a snack.

The town of Yellow Grass is under a precautionary boil water advisory and it will continue until Sask. Environment says otherwise. The new water treatment plant is still not up and running. The latest problem was a break in the main water line coming in from the wells and this is being treated too. The town has paid their share to the water treatment plant. A fee of $30 per month will be billed to all users in Yellow Grass so the town can pay the loan payment each year.

The book draw winner at the Yellow Grass Branch Library for January was Ben Thompson and the book draw winner for February was Gabriel Bauming. Kacy Byrns won the candy guessing contest by guessing 43 candies in the jar, and there was actually 42. Fifteen children and three adults participated in the competition. The next activity was held on Mar. 14 at 4 p.m. with a St. Patrick's Day craft and snack to follow.

Three tables of crib were played at the Drop In on Feb. 24. Winners were: Ruth Boren, and Bill Harder. Crib winners on March 2 were: Doug Wilkinson and Ruth Boren.

The monthly coffee and fundraiser was held in the Drop In on March 6.
Ralph Whitrow of B.C., and former resident of Yellow Grass, passed away on Feb. 24. A family memorial service was held on March 3 at the home of their son Stirling and Christiana's in Surrey, B.C. Son-in-law Ron Frazer and his son officiated.

A large dumping of snow on March 1 followed by icy conditions on March 6 reminded everyone winter is not over.
