Aaron Turnbull overtakes brother for second mod win

For a while, it looked like Tyson Turnbull was going to pick up his first win of the year in last Wednesday's modified feature at Estevan Motor Speedway.

As it turned out, there was a Turnbull in victory lane but it was his brother, Aaron, taking the honours.

In a race laden with yellow flags, Aaron overtook his brother in the final 10 laps and built a sizeable lead en route to his second victory of the season.

"I didn't think I was going to get him for a while, he was pretty quick," Aaron said. "I just got lucky and found a good line there and got ahead of him, and once I got ahead of him I went to the top and that was kind of the place to be once (the track) got cleaned off.

"The car was working really good, so it made my job easy."

While Aaron was building his lead, Tyson fell back further and eventually finished fourth behind Devin Raynard and Mike Hagen.

It was clear sailing for Aaron after he took the lead, with the race finishing cleanly after a sequence of three straight cautions earlier had prompted a single-file restart.

It was Turnbull's second straight victory in point races, having won on June 29. Between the two wins was a stellar performance on the Dakota Classic Modified Tour.

"It's been going really good. (The season) got off to a bit of a slow start but it's been going really good here lately," he said.

Raynard continues to lead the season standings with 193 points, with Turnbull moving into second place at 177.

Tyler Wagner and Hagen aren't far behind Turnbull.

Rocky Alexander, meanwhile, picked up his second win of the year in the street stock feature, holding off Kelly Henderson and Robby Rosselli for the checkered flag.

"Kelly Henderson's always a great competitor when he's here. Robby Rosselli, Gregg Mann, Geoff Mann, they're all great racers and I enjoy racing against them," said Alexander.

"It's quite the challenge every night to come out and run with them."

The track conditions Wednesday were ideal for Alexander to hold his lead.

"It was dry slick, which we like. You need to drive with finesse. It's a brand new car this year and it's meant for dry slick."

Aside from the two wins, Alexander and his No. 99 have been in the thick of virtually every race this season. He currently sits second in the point standings, three behind Rosselli.

"We're usually placing top five every night, if not top two. We like running out there with the best of them. We've had some hard luck with the car, but we think we've got it figured out now."

Dustin Byler took the win in the hobby stock feature after finishing second in three of his past four races. Two-time winner Justin Medler was a close second.

Tyler Thompson leads the season hobby standings with 250 points, 12 ahead of Gary Goudy and 13 ahead of Cory Evans.

Another regular card was staged last night at the Speedway. The next race night is Aug. 10.
