Beavers split action, final push of season

The Beavers had a very busy week as they split seven games last week. All the teams in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) are currently on their final push before the playoffs, which start Saturday, July 30.



The Beavers had a very busy week as they split seven games last week. All the teams in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) are currently on their final push before the playoffs, which start Saturday, July 30.

The Swift Current Indians traveled to Weyburn on Sunday and steamrolled the hometown Beavers 13-4. The Indians came out fast and hard, scoring eight runs in the first four innings. The Beavers managed two runs in the second inning.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Beavers picked up a single in the sixth inning. Swift Current surged ahead even further in the seventh inning with five runs, while the Beavers only scored one. Neither team scored in the eight or ninth.

Jesus Francies was the losing pitcher for Weyburn. He threw 10 hits and two strike outs in the first four innings of play. The scoring runners were Curtis Ford, Nick Iacovella, Jon Neuberger, Reed Lavallee, and Daniel Perron, all with singles.

The Beavers traveled to Saskatoon on Saturday to take on the Yellow Jackets, losing 11-6. Saskatoon led 2-0 after scoring runs in the second and fourth innings. The Beavers tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the fifth. Saskatoon picked up two more runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, and one in the eighth. The Beavers scored four runs in the ninth.

Alex Gale was the losing Beaver pitcher with 13 hits and two strike outs. Daniel Perron and Nick Iacovella both scored two run, and Chris Norquay and Jon Neuberger scored singles.

The Beavers played a double-header against the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets on Friday, winning 9-6 and 5-4. The Beavers started the first game with four runs in the first inning, followed by two in the second for an early 6-1 lead. Weyburn scored twice in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend their lead. The Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the fourth, and closed the gap in the sixth inning with four runs. Neither team scored in the seventh.

AJ Gallardo was the winning pitcher in game one with two hits and three strike outs. Scoring runners were Johnathan Rodriguez, Chad Livingston, Derek Wallace, Mark Darlington, Chris Norquay, and Reed Lavallee, all with singles. Curtis Ford scored three runs. This game lasted over five hours due to a mid-game rain delay.

In the second game against Saskatoon, the Beavers had a 2-0 lead after two innings. Saskatoon scored three runs in the third, and a single in the fourth. The Beavers tied the game by scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. This forced the game into an eighth inning, where the Beavers scored a single run for the win.

Xavier de la Cruz was the winning pitcher with one hit and one strike out. Scoring runners were Curtis Ford with two runs, Nick Iacovella, Reed Lavallee, and Jon Neuberger with singles.

The Beavers hosted the Moose Jaw Miller Express on July 20, winning 6-4. They scored three runs in the first inning, and extended their lead further in the sixth and seventh innings with single runs. Moose Jaw got on the score board in the eight inning with four runs, while the Beavers scored once.

Phil Curtis was the winning pitcher, with five hits and four strike outs. Rodriguez, Chad Livingston, and Daniel Perron scored singles, and Derek Wallace scored three runs.

The Beavers played the Regina Red Sox on July 19, losing 6-3. The Beavers scored the first run, but Regina quickly took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. The Beavers scored a single in the fourth and sixth innings, while Regina scored singles in the fifth and sixth.

Francies lost on the mound for the Beavers, he had seven hits and seven strike outs. Rodriguez, Wallace, and Ford scored singles.

Another game was played against Regina on July 18, that was lost 8-5. Regina took an early 4-0 lead after a single in the first and three runs in the third. Alex Gale was the losing Beaver pitcher with nine hits and three strike outs. Jon Neuberger scored two runs, while Chad Livingston, Chris Norquay, and Reed Lavallee all picked up singles

The Beavers were back in action in Regina on Monday, and at home against the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Tuesday. Due to publication deadlines these games will be detailed in next week's Weyburn Review. The last home game of the season is Thursday, July 28 when the Beavers host Yorkton at 7 p.m.
