Assiniboia played host to the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association Boys Provincial Curling Championship on March 9-11. There were eight teams from each of the four regions of the province including Yorkton, Regina, Carlyle, Saskatoon, Spiritwood, Tisdale and Carrot River and the home team from Assiniboia Composite High School. Coached by Kevin Gronsdahl and Corbin Froshaug, the team of Conner Gronsdahl, skip, Kohlton Booth, lead, Eric Hawkins, second, Dalton Wenaus, third and Kale Froshaug, alternate, advanced to the finals as silver medalists, and also earned a berth as host of the event. All participating teams reached this stage by winning at sectionals, districts, and regionals before advancing as gold or silver medalists to the provincials.
The Assiniboia rink began the competition in Pool B with a stellar record. They won all three games in their round robin to advance to the championship round. However, after losing a close game to Spiritwood, they advanced to the bronze medal game against St. Joseph’s High School from Saskatoon. Again, the Assiniboia rink played a back-and-forth close game, but fell short to take the fourth spot overall. The championship game saw Carlyle dominate the Spiritwood team and win 9-2 to take home the gold. Spiritwood took the silver, and the team from Saskatoon captured the bronze. The championship ended with a ceremony and trophy awarded to Carlyle with plaques going to the place winners.
