MELFORT - Another night, another dramatic victory for the Estevan Bruins.

Kade Runke scored 27 seconds into extra time to lift the Bruins to a 3-2 overtime victory over the Melfort Mustangs Saturday night in Melfort. It was the Bruins’ fifth straight victory.

Melfort had the lone goal of the first period – a tally by Wyatt Day 11:09 into the first period. Cody Davis tied the game for Estevan with a goal 5:48 into the middle frame.

Midway through the third period, Ashton Taylor scored to give the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage. His goal came moments after the Bruins had a four-minute power play. But then defenceman Alex Blanchard scored with just over five minutes to play in the third to send the game to overtime, and set the stage for Runke’s heroics.

Cam Hrdlicka made 25 saves for the Bruins. He has been in goal for all five games during the winning streak.

Joel Favreau stopped 31 shots in the Mustangs’ goal.

Melfort will be back on the ice Tuesday night when they visit the Notre Dame Hounds at 8 p.m.

The Bruins, meanwhile, will host the Flin Flon Bombers Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Affinity Place. It will be the first meeting between the two teams since last year’s SJHL final, which Estevan won in seven games. It will also be the first game back in Estevan for Bombers’ defenceman Alex Von Sprecken, an Estevan hockey product who was dealt by the Bruins to the Bombers on Oct. 4.
