CARLYLE - In conjunction with Viterra andCurlSask, the Carlyle Curling Club hosted a very successful youth clinic last week.

Thirty-five youngsters age five to 18 came out and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the game of curling. Dustin Mikush is the development co-ordinator of CurlSask.  Over 120 curling clubs in Saskatchewan were asked to participate in this one-day event and the Carlyle club accepted their invitation.

Viterra, Canada’s largest grain handler, has been a partner of CurlSask for several years and with the clinic being sponsored, participation was free. Potential young curlers registered online and came from several towns in the surrounding area, including Carlyle, Manor, Arcola, Wawota and Redvers.

Due to the large number of participants, this event had to be conducted in two sessions, with the curling club providing the youngsters with pizza and refreshments in between.

Michelle Cooper was one of the parents who had her two children, Jessica, age 11, and Ryan, nine, participate. Said Cooper: “It was an excellent opportunity to give curling a shot as both kids had never set foot on a curling rink before. They made amazing progress in a short amount of time. Thank you to the volunteers and organizers of this event.”

Curling club member Michael Lothian was pleased with the turnout. Said Lothian, “We haven’t had a clinic such as this for several years and we were impressed with the numbers. Hopefully the kids and their parents come out next year and give curling a try.”

Concluded Lothian, “The Carlyle Club wishes to thank Viterra and CurlSask for sponsoring this great event. There was a great turnout and we plan on holding another clinic in the early winter of 2022.”

Curling Club members Michael Lothian and Jess Franklin were very pleased with the turnout. Said Lothian, “We haven’t had a clinic such as this for several years and we were impressed with the numbers. Hopefully the kids and their parents come out next year and give curling a try!”

The club is also losing one of very active members Jess Franklin, who is also a dedicated volunteer. He and his wife Joanne are in the process of moving to Falcon Lake, Man. They have sold their Carlyle residence and Joanne Franklin is being promoted by the RCMP.
