For the first time in their history, the Carnduff Astros have won the Saskota Baseball League title.

The Astros defeated the Arcola Threshers 15-4 in Sunday’s final in Kenosee Lake to win the league’s Harbourne Memorial Trophy.

It was an unlikely matchup, as the Astros entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, thanks to a 6-8-2 record, while the Threshers (4-10-2) were the seventh-ranked team.

Both teams went 2-1 in their respective round-robin pools to advance to the semifinal. The Threshers upset the top-seeded team, the Oxbow Chiefs, to advance to the final. (Score was not available).

Meanwhile, the Astros defeated the two-time defending league champions, the Estevan Tap House Wolves, 2-1 in a pitcher’s duel in the other semifinal.

The top eight teams in the league qualified for the tournament. They were divided into two pools of four for a round robin. The opening games of the round robin were played in different communities on Friday. Then the remaining games were played Saturday and Sunday in Kenosee.

The next edition of Southeast Lifestyles will have more on this story.
