Coalers stay alive in the Big Six playoffs; Rockets advance to the final

The Redvers Rockets have advanced to the Big Six Hockey League final.

One Big Six Hockey League semifinal is finished, while the other has been extended.

The Redvers Rockets trounced the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings 9-1 Friday night in Redvers to win the best-of-five semifinal series in three straight games. Redvers led 4-0 after the first period and 6-1 through two.

Kenton Miller had three goals and an assist for the Rockets. Braeden Magotiaux and Preston Kopeck had two goals each, and Koltyn Miller and Brady Gaudet also scored. Thomas Bauche was in goal.

Zach Douglas scored for Yellow Grass. Tanner Erickson was the Wheat Kings’ goalie.

Redvers outscored Yellow Grass 28-4 in the series.

As for the other game, the Bienfait Coalers outgunned the Moosomin Rangers 9-8 in overtime Friday night in Game 3 of that showdown. Moosomin leads the best-of-five semifinal 2-1.

Bienfait led 2-1 after the first period, but Moosomin scored four straight goals to lead 5-2. Bienfait responded with four unanswered tallies of their own for a 6-5 lead.

The game was tied at 7-7 when Jacob Piller scored with 65 seconds to play in the third to give Mosoomin an 8-7 lead. But Jason Hengen tied the game 40 seconds later.

Kaelan Holt scored 2:44 into overtime to send the series to Game 4.

Taysen Holt scored twice and had three assists for Bienfait. Dylan Lay also scored twice. Ryan Curzon, Klae Bayda and Kyle Salaway were the other scorers.

Piller finished with two goals on the night for Moosomin and Carter Sawchuk also had two. Paul Stapleton, Phil Doucet, Drayson Skulmoski and Dawson Springer also scored. Bud Holloway had five assists.

Zack Miller was in goal for Bienfait, while Levi Horn was the Moosomin goaltender.

Game 4 between Moosomin and Bienfait will be played Sunday night in Bienfait at 8 p.m.

In provincial play, the Carlyle Cougars defeated the Grenfell Spitfires 5-1 Friday night in Carlyle in Game 2 of the best-of-three senior B south final. Grenfell won Game 1 4-1 the previous weekend.

Game 3 will be Sunday in Carlyle at 1 p.m. The winner will play Wilkie or Wadena in the provincial final.

Redvers is playing the Kenaston Blizzards in the senior C south final. Game 1 will be Sunday in Redvers at 6 p.m. Game 2 would be March 10 in Kenaston, and Game 3, if necessary, would be the following day in Kenaston.

The winner faces Eston or Porcupine Plain in the provincial final.

The Carnduff Red Devils will play the Theodore Buffalos Saturday in Carnduff at 7 p.m. in Game 2 of the best-of-three senior D south final. Carnduff can wrap up the series with a win, as the Red Devils won Game 1 5-2 in Theodore on Feb. 25.

Game 3, if necessary, would be Sunday in Carnduff at 2:30 p.m.
