Cougars eliminated from Big Six playoffs, now focused on provincials

The Moosomin Rangers have advanced in the Big Six playoffs.

CARLYLE - The Carlyle Cougars have been eliminated from the Big Six Hockey League’s playoffs, but their season isn’t finished.

The Cougars fell 6-5 to the Moosomin Rangers Monday night in Carlyle in Game 2 of their first round series. Moosomin swept the best-of-three match-up.

Both teams came out gunning on Monday night, and Carlyle had a 4-3 lead after the first period. Moosomin tied the game with the lone goal of the second, and then the Rangers took the lead by outscoring the Cougars 2-1 in the third.

Dakota Rose had two goals for the Cougars. Tony Kinistino, Austin Bourhis and Jon Gaudet had the Cougars' other goals. Ben Johnstone added three assists.

Carter Sawchuk scored twice for Moosomin, including the game-winner 7:14 into the third, and added two assists. Drayson Skulmoski and Devin McGonigal also had two goals each for the Rangers.

Bud Holloway assisted on three Moosomin goals. 

Levi Horn (Moosomin) and Zane Winter (Carlyle) were the goalies.

Moosomin joins the Redvers Rockets in the Big Six's semifinal round. 

The Cougars are now focused on Hockey Sask. provincials. They swept the Oxbow Huskies in the best-of-three Senior B South Semifinal.

There are two games in the Big 6 playoffs on Tuesday night. The Bienfait Coalers will try to keep their season alive when they host the Carnduff Red Devils in Game 2 of their best-of-three series.

And Oxbow will host the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings in Game 1 of that series.

Both games start at 8 p.m.
