The Estevan Baxter Cougars midget A team dominated the Melville Miss Mills on their own turf Friday night, besting their opponent 8-1.

Paige Collopy kicked off the scoring for the girls in the first period with a goal 13:19. She followed that goal up with two helpers later in the game.

Jennifer Biette and Rayna Gibson scored in the first giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead heading into the second and showing no signs of letting up.

Cheyenne Grant scored twice in the second along with one goal by Meagan Hamilton. Up six goals heading into the third, the girls were able to coast.

The Cougars scored twice more in the third with a goal by Katie Cameron. Miss Mills players fended off the Cougar power play seven times but Alaura Gress's goal in the third prevented the power play from going scoreless.

Amata Poirier's shutout was spoiled with 6:32 remaining in the final period.

That game closed out the season for the Cougars who finished in first with 41 points, 10 points ahead of the second-place Regina Flames.

The Cougars were granted a bye to the second round of the playoffs and will play the winner of a two-game total-goals series between the Regina Panthers and Fort Qu'Appelle. That series will begin after Feb. 28.
