Elecs earn junior badminton medals in Weyburn

A pair of doubles' teams from Estevan Comprehensive School earned medals at a junior badminton tournament in Weyburn on Saturday. Tija Donovan and Rik Bastiaansen earned gold in mixed doubles in a field of 11 teams.

Tija Donovan and Rik Bastiaansen earned gold in mixed doubles in a field of 11 teams.

Regan Haukeness and Aiden Holzer reached the boys' doubles final, but lost by the slimmest of margins with a 16-14 defeat in the third set to take home silver.

In girls' singles, Kim Abarquez lost her semi-final match. No bronze medal game was played.
The Elecs sent eight athletes to the tournament.

Meanwhile, the ECS senior badminton club was preparing to host the Region 3 sub-district playoffs on Tuesday afternoon.

Six schools attended the sub-districts, which featured two pools of four entries each in a round-robin format, followed by playoff crossovers with the top two from each pool.

The top two finishers in each category advance to the South East District Athletic Association tournament May 3 in Carnduff.

District qualifiers will attend the East Central regional May 7 in Yorkton, with provincials taking place May 14 in Biggar.
