ESTEVAN - For the second straight night, the Estevan Bruins mounted a comeback against a northern opponent, but this time, they didn’t skate away with the victory.

The Bruins dropped a 3-2 decision in a shootout to the La Ronge Ice Wolves Thursday night at Affinity Place.

Olivier Pouliot scored for the Bruins with 75 seconds left in the third period to force extra time.

After a scoreless first period, La Ronge’s Gavin Mattey and Anthony Oviedo tallied 61 seconds apart to give the Ice Wolves a 2-0 lead. Kian Calder’s goal with 6 1/2 minutes to play in the middle frame pulled the Bruins to within one.

Boston Bilous made 32 saves for the Bruins, including six in overtime and two in the shootout. La Ronge had the lone goal in the penalty shot contest.

The game was 24 hours after the Bruins rallied in the third to defeat the Flin Flon Bombers 3-1.

Estevan’s next game is Saturday at the Melville Millionaires. That game was to be played in September, but was postponed after the Mills had a case of COVID-19 with the team.
