ESTEVAN - The Estevan TS&M U13 AA Brewers are the best in the west.

The Brewers trounced the North Langley Trappers 15-5 in six innings Sunday afternoon at Mel Murray Cactus Park in Estevan to win the Western Canada Baseball Championship. The mercy rule was invoked when Estevan had a 10-run lead in the sixth.

Estevan set the tone early, scoring three times in the first and four times in the second for a 7-0 lead. Langley would get two in the fourth, but Estevan responded with three to lead 10-2.

Langley scored three in the sixth, but a five-run sixth inning put the game away for Estevan.

The Brewers were the top team in the tournament's round robin with a 3-1 record. The Brewers won their first three games - 10-9 over Alberta's Camrose Cougars Royal, 11-10 over the Trappers and 10-6 over Manitoba's Pembina Hills. Then they lost 19-1 to Saskatchewan's Maidstone Lakers in their final round robin game, but still had enough to finish first.

This marks the first time that an Estevan U13 team has won a Western Canadian title, and it's the second Western Canadian championship ever for Estevan Minor Baseball. The last one came in 2008.

The next edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
