Girls head to badminton provincials

Regional Badminton Playoffs were successful for two Weyburn girls. On May 6, the team of Dakota and Mauren Borys went to Yorkton to compete in regional badminton playoffs.

On May 6, the team of Dakota and Mauren Borys went to Yorkton to compete in regional badminton playoffs. The girls are sisters; Dakota is in Grade 12 and Mauren is in Grade 10 at the Weyburn Comprehensive School.This was the first time the sisters played together as a team.

The girls beat teams from Greenall, Middle Lake and Melville to come in first place in their pool. In the semi-final cross-over round they had to play Southey.The match went a total three games.

The girls lost the first game 21-14.They were behind in the second game, but rallied a comeback to win 23-21. The match went to a tie breaker game and although close, the Borys girls held the lead and won 21-19. This win assured them a spot in the provincial tournament.

The gold medal round was played against Oxbow, a team that had beaten the girls in two close games at District play downs.This time, the girls defeated Oxbow 21-19 in both games to take gold.Because the top two teams advance to the next round, both Weyburn and Oxbow will be representing the region at provincials in Biggar on Saturday, May 14.

The team is coached by Marlin Flavel, and teacher Kelly Glaspey.
