Another season of junior high school basketball has ended in Weyburn. On Thursday, teams from both Weyburn Junior High School and St. Michael Junior High boys teams played host to district playoffs. As well, the girls' teams from St. Michael and the Junior High played in district championships hosted by Estevan. Weyburn Junior High's girls 'B' team played in Redvers.

At the Junior High School, the Cobra's 'A' basketball team hosted the intermediate boys playoff. The playoff brought in teams from Estevan Comprehensive School and Moosomin's McNaughton School.

The boys started out their playoffs against McNaughton. The Cobras defeated the team from Moosomin by a score of 59-42. The win put the boys in the district final, where they squared off against the Estevan Elecs.

The boys from Weyburn came up just short against the Elecs, losing 46-45. The Cobras had the lead in the game's final minute until an Estevan player hit a three-point shot to give the Elecs the win.

"It is always heartbreaking to lose, but my boys played hard. They came back from a 12-point deficit at halftime to lead in the final quarter," said Cobras coach Averyl Knapp.

Knapp also said her team "improved all year" and worked better as a team as the season went on. The team will have seven Grade 9's moving on to the Comp next year.

At St. Michael Junior High, the school played host to the district's AA junior boys playoff. The playoff included the host Tigers, Rocanville School, Oxbow Prairie Horizons School, and the Weyburn Junior High boys 'B' team.

St Michael were defeated in their opening game by the Rocanville Rara Avis 86-57. The Weyburn team put up a good fight, but the Rocanville outfit was simply too big and strong for the Tigers.

The Weyburn Cobras 'B' boys basketball team played in the next game against Oxbow Prairie Horizons. The Cobras were able to come out and win the game in a close 39-34 contest.

The St. Michael loss put them in the 'B' final against the boys from Oxbow's Prairie Horizon School. St. Michael came up short again the 'B' final, losing 85-63.
The Weyburn Cobras went to the district final, where they played the Rara Avis. Rocanville was the class of the district this year, defeating Weyburn 79-30.
The Cobras girls 'A' team and St. Michael girls played their district playoffs in Estevan. The two Weyburn clubs faced off in their opening match, with the Cobras besting their rivals from St. Michael by 10 points. The Cobras went to the finals, where they played against Estevan. The host Elecs took advantage of playing on their home floor and beat Weyburn by 30 points.

His team may have lost in the final, but Cobras coach Darren Johnson said his team has had "major improvements this year."

"We have gotten better at everything this year. To get to where we have from where we started is just great," Johnson said.

The Cobras girls will also have seven girls going on to the Comp next fall.
With the basketball season coming to a close and spring fast approaching, the sporting focus at Weyburn's junior high schools will now turn to badminton and track and field.
