Midget A Bruins open provincials with win

The Estevan Sherritt Coal midget A Bruins began their quest for a provincial crown on Sunday, defeating the Yorkton Terriers 4-2 in Game 1 of their first-round series. The contest was played in Yorkton, with Game 2 coming Feb. 13 at Spectra Place.

The contest was played in Yorkton, with Game 2 coming Feb. 13 at Spectra Place. Cole Stevenson led the Bruins with a hat trick, with Landon Lavoie adding a single.

Stevenson scored twice in the first period and the Bruins took a 3-0 lead on Lavoie's marker at 5:27 of the second.

The Terriers got on the board five minutes later on a Dylan Johnson goal. Stevenson's hat trick marker early in the third made it 4-1. The Wings would add another goal four minutes later on a Nathan Guy goal.

Meanwhile, the Estevan Baxter Cougars blanked the Weyburn Oilers 6-0 in female midget A action on Friday.

Paige Collopy led the way with a hat trick while Katie Cameron, Shelby Betzema and Allison Mack also scored.

The Cougars led 3-0 after the first period and kept up the pressure. Final shots were 37-25 for the Cougars.

The two teams were scheduled to play again in Weyburn last night to make up a game from Nov. 20.
The Cougars are home for a pair of games at Spectra Place this weekend, hosting the Melville Miss Mils Saturday at 5:45 p.m., and the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers Sunday at 3.
