On May 26 the Southeast Corner Racing Circuit (SCRC) held their first race of the season in Carlyle at the Bowan Rekken BKR Moto-X Track. A late start to the day came because of the overcast weather that was threatening to pour down. Luckily there was nothing more than a few drops over the course of the day. The dedicated bunch of racers and fans, however, endured the entire day despite the cold and wind.
The day was made possible by a large group of volunteers who all worked extremly hard to pull off the two moto format, which many racers had wanted. This meant that there were two heats for each race and a winner was determined based on the riders standings combined from them. Thank you is extended to all of those that helped with the day including the flaggers, One Guy and a Grill, the lap counters, the emergency personnel at the track, and all others that contributed to the day.
It was the first time that the club in Carlyle was able to use their new starting gates and transponders to keep track of the racer's laps. The gates were donated by Millennium Directional Tools and it was exciting for them to be used, a step up from the two bungee cords that had been in use before. Other donations and support came from Precision Ag Services, Edge Drill Bit, True Torque Power Tongs, CanElson Drilling, Spearing Service, Moose Mountain Leisure, KRJ Fabricating, and Carlyle Rental Centre. While Kelly's Hotshot sponsored the Hole Shot, which is a prize in the form of cash and a plaque to the rider that reaches the initial corner first in each race.
With twelve different categories there were 24 runs altogether, which made for a full day of high speeds and big jumps. The winners flew to the front through hard fought battles around corners and straight aways. The winner of the C Class race was Lane Johnson. Travis King won the Super Mini, while Bryson Mayer won the B Class. Mason Henderson went on to win both the A Class race and the Youth 16 to 29 race. Greg Miller took the win in the 125 Stroke race. The 50cc race was taken by Noah Jacobson, as the 65cc was won by Jordan Hillrich. William Merrett won the 85cc race. Blake Kirkup took the Small Wheel Beginner race, while the Veteran race was won by Blain Goforth. The Women's Open was taken by Kate Lee.
The top five racers of each category were recognized at the end of the day, receiving plaques. Hole Shot winners were recognized with a plaque, as well as winning $20.
It was a fun day for everyone who attended, despite the cold. Kids cheered on their siblings and parents, while riding their push bikes back and forth.
The SCRC is made up of riders from all over the area. Races are held eight times per season: two are held in Carlyle, Weyburn, Estevan, and Oxbow. The next action in Carlyle will be Sept. 15, which is the same weekend as Homespun.
