ESTEVAN - The Melfort Mustangs scored three times in the first period in a 6-2 victory over the Estevan Bruins on Friday night at Affinity Place in Estevan.

Kevin Minnoch scored 49 seconds into the first period for Melfort, and Wyatt Day doubled the advantage less than five minutes later. Leyton Holoien put Melfort ahead 3-0 with a power-play goal before the 12-minute mark of the period.

Zac Somers added to the lead less than seven minutes into the second. Alex Blanchard put the Bruins on the board with 6:53 to play in the middle frame, but Clarke Huxley’s goal 70 seconds later restored the four-goal lead.

A goal by the Bruins’ Cody Davis on the power play midway through the third gave the Bruins a bit of momentum, but Ashton Taylor finished the scoring for Melfort with an empty-net goal.

Cam Hrdlicka stopped 20 of the 25 shots he faced. James Venne made 26 saves on 28 shots for Melfort.

It was just the third loss on home ice for the Bruins this season.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night in Estevan. The game starts at 7 p.m.
