Northern road trip earns Red Wings two victories

Kilgore wins goaltender of the month



While playing in northern Saskatchewan three nights in a row, the Weyburn Red Wings captured two wins against Kindersley, and lost against Battleford. They are still in first place in the Sherwood division of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, with their Christmas break quickly approaching.

In Kindersley on Dec. 11, the Red Wings won 4-1 against the Kindersley Klippers. Weyburn started strong by scoring three times in the first period. Jordon Hoffman scored the first two, one at 3:52 and the other at 9:36, and they were both assisted by Robert Wilkinson and Sam Williams; and Keegan Bruce scored at 12:23, assisted by Tyler Borstmayer and Jesse Ross.

Bruce was the lone scorer for the Wings in the second period, notching a goal at 1:46, assisted by Coltyn Sanderson and Ross. The Klippers took their only goal of the game in the third. Brett Teskey backstopped the Wings to their win, stopping 17 out of 18 attempts.

The Red Wings faced off against the top team on the league, the Battleford North Stars, on Dec. 10, and lost 6-3. The North Stars notched two goals in each of the first, second and third period.

The Red Wings were unable to score until the third period, when they scored three times against Battleford.

Ross scored a power play goal at 11:32, assisted by Sanderson and Hoffman; Borstmayer scored a power play goal at 14:28, assisted by Bruce and Sanderson; and Hoffman scored at 15:09, assisted by Ross and Jackson Schneider.

Mitch Kilgore was in net for the loss, stopping 31 out of 36 attempts. The Red Wings had a total of 25 attempts against the Battlefords goaltender.

The Red Wings won 5-4 over the Kindersley Klippers on Dec. 9. The first period started tied, with Sanderson scoring during a power play at 7:07, assisted by Ross and Bruce.

Then during the second period, the Red Wings scored three times and kept the Klippers to only one goal. Miguel Pereira scored at 8:03, assisted by Bruce and Hoffman; Braden Kmita scored at 15:52, assisted by Pereira and Hoffman; and Williams scored at 18:45, assisted by Pereira and Hoffman.

Kindersley scored twice in the third period, but Weyburn kept onto their lead after Sanderson scored at 12:37, assisted by Ross. Earning the win in net was Kilgore, who stopped 35 out of 39 attempts.

Kilgore earned the shutout win. It was one of the reasons why he was awarded the SJHL goaltender of the month, for the month of November.

The Red Wings are in action at Crescent Point Place twice before their Christmas break. They host Melfort on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m., and Melville on Sunday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.

The Red Wings gained three more spots on the Top 20 rankings of the Canadian Junior Hockey League as of Dec. 12. They are now placed 12th overall. The other team from the SJHL on the list is the Battelfords North Stars, who dropped to sixth place from fourth. The Red Wings are 10 points behind the North Stars in the SJHL.
