Canada faced Russia in a re-match of last year’s loss. Team Canada lost to Russia 4-1 and earned a silver medal. The 2017 Winter Universiade ran January 29 to February 8.
Gavelin started her hockey career playing in Mankota and Glentworth. She now attends the University of Regina and has played women’s hockey with the Regina Cougars since 2013. Gavelin attended a hockey development camp in Calgary in August and was selected for Team Canada.
During the Winter Univerisade, Team Canada competed in Group A alongside China, Great Britain and host Kazakhstan. Group B included defending champion Russia, Japan and the USA. Team Canada swept its group and won 8-1 against Team USA in the semi-final.
Two other University of Cougars teammates, Alexis Larson and Jaycee Magwood, also competed with Team Canada. Both Gavelin and Larson are alumni of the Weyburn Southern Range Gold Wings.
