ESTEVAN - The Special Olympics Estevan chapter picked up a couple of awards at the Special Olympics Saskatchewan SaskTel Awards banquet Friday.

The Estevan chapter earned the Community Excellence Award.

And Conrad Meili was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award, which is bestowed to someone who has made a significant contribution to Special Olympics within their community.

The announcement generated numerous congratulatory messages on social media, including his wife Kandyce.

“Many don’t see all the hard work Conrad puts in to this but he worked his tail off all last year making sure the Estevan athletes had programs to go to - no matter what,” she wrote. “He challenges and overcomes every roadblock that is put in his path. He was instrumental in increasing the Special Olympics volunteer base in Estevan by 120 per cent.

“He has built a relationship with athletes, their families and Estevan Diversified Services as well as with the people at the venues where our programs are held.”

Conrad brought his wife and daughters onto the stage to receive the community award. He noted that so many people from Estevan could own the award.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
