Three Weyburn teams play at Legasse tourney, Oilers secure title

Three minor baseball teams from Weyburn were at the Legasse Tournament in Regina during the May long weekend. The Weyburn Oilers secured the Legasse title in the mosquito division, a title that they had not won since 2004.

Three minor baseball teams from Weyburn were at the Legasse Tournament in Regina during the May long weekend. The Weyburn Oilers secured the Legasse title in the mosquito division, a title that they had not won since 2004.In game one of the tournament, the Oilers won 11-7 over the Regina Athletics. On the mound were Evan McClarity, Wyatt Arndt, Eric Joa and Ryan Gaab. Big hits for the Oilers were taken by Gaab, Arndt, McClarity and Walker Happ.The Oilers then took a 14-5 win over the Regina Buffalos. Pitchers were Chad Brock and Jaxson Robertson. Doubles in this game were hit by Kelly Kwochka, Gaab and Happ.Game three was the only loss taken by the Oilers in the tournament, with a close 2-1 game against the Swift Current Indians. Pitching was Ryan Gaab and Rhett Nikolejsin.Advancing to the semi finals, the Oilers returned to the field against the Indians, and secured a 6-4 win in another close game. Pitchers were Joa and McClarity, with Nikolejsin hitting a single that brought in two runs.In the final match against the Regina White Sox, the Oilers secured the title with a 8-5 win. On the mound was Gaab and Nikolejsin. Doubles were hit by Joa, Happ and Nikolejsin. Gaab hit a grand slam at the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Oilers down by one run, for the win.Also at the Legasse Tournament were the Weyburn Legion Royals and the Peewee Youngfellows. The Legion Royals were placed in pool C of their bantam tournament and lost 6-2 against Swift Current, 4-2 to the Buffalos and 3-0 against Winnipeg. The Youngfellows were placed in pool B of their peewee tournament and lost 8-1 to the Saskatoon As, 4-2 to the White Sox, and 5-0 to the Oil Dome.In other minor baseball action, the Weyburn Bantam Wild hosted Fort QuAppelle in a home doubleheader on Saturday, defeating them 10-7 and 13-5.The Southeast Royals were in Moose Jaw for a tournament last weekend. They made it to the championship game, where they won the tournament title.In game one, the Royals defeated Okotoks 10-1. On the mound Eric Evans had 12 outs, Austin Halladay had seven outs and Jarrett Phillips had three outs. Then in game two, the Royals defeated Lloydminister 8-5. On the mound were Braden Radmacher with 12 outs and Zachery Shelsted with six outs.Taking on the Diamondbacks in game three, the Royals won a close 3-2 game. On the mound Kris Keating had 18 outs and Tyler Kendall had three outs. Then in the championship game against the Saskatoon Giants, the Royals claimed a 6-1 win. Pitching for the entire game was James Good with 21 outs.The Southeast Royals will be playing an exhibition game with the Weyburn Beavers on June 1 in Estevan. Teams will be divided so that Canadian players from the Beavers are paired with Weyburn players from the Royals and American players from the Beavers are paired with Estevan players from the Royals.
