WEYBURN - Hockey fans will have a chance to see the top prospects for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings this weekend. The annual fall camp will be held Friday to Sunday, August 25 to 27.
There will be four different practice teams that will be on the ice at Crescent Point Place during the entire weekend. A camp schedule is available on the Weyburn Red Wings Facebook and Twitter page.
The highlight of the weekend will be the Eric Calibaba and Friends Cup, also known as the Red and White Game, which will be held on Sunday, August 27 at 6 p.m.
Attending any of the practice games during the fall camp is free, however there is a $5 cost to attend the Calibaba Cup. The Red Wings will raffle off a campfire pit during the second intermission of the final game.
During the recent annual general meeting for the Red Wings, head coach Cody Mapes noted that 80 players expected to attend the camp. There are three Weyburn players hoping to make the team roster.
Mapes added there are good local players who are coming up through minor hockey, and the Red Wings will continue improving relations with minor hockey teams, which includes having players involved in the community. Of the incoming players, Mapes said the team will be led by character players, with six having served as captains on their minor hockey teams, and three as assistant captains.
“For us, that’s very important. Wherever they are, we want them to be leaders,” he said.
The Red Wings pre-season schedule will include three road games, and three home games.
The Red Wings start the pre-season in Yorkton with a game against the Terriers on Tuesday, September 5.
Another road game will be held in Melville against the Millionaires on Wednesday, September 6.
The annual pre-season home and home feature against the Estevan Bruins on Friday, September 8 in Estevan, and then at Crescent Point Place on Saturday, September 9.
The Red Wings final two home games of the preseason include hosting the Yorkton Terriers on Wednesday, September 13 and hosting the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday, September 15. All pre-season games start at 7 p.m.
The Red Wings will also host a fundraising golf tournament at the Weyburn Golf Course on Saturday, September 16, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
