Weyburn Comp junior boys on a roll, wins Moosomin tourney

The Weyburn Comp Eagles junior boys basketball team travelled to Moosomin for a tournament on Feb. 16 and 17, coming away with wins.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Comp Eagles junior boys basketball team travelled to Moosomin for a tournament on Feb. 16 and 17.

The boys played Rocanville Friday night and won by a large margin. On Saturday morning they had a very tough physical challenge from Estevan, but were able to pull out a 64-51 victory.

The final game was against the crosstown rivals from St. Michael School. This was the closest game the boys have had all year with the lead changing many times. St Mike’s was up by one point and had the ball for a throw-in with six seconds left. Jacob Gill stole the ball and made a layup that seemed to hang in the rim for several seconds before falling in to put WCS up by one with one second left.

“I am so proud of how these boys handled themselves this weekend and never gave up. They were always positive on the bench and cheering each other on,” said coach Darren Johnson.

This is the second year in a row the boys have won this tournament, the fourth tournament championship of the season and keeps the boys undefeated at 14-0. The next action for the boys is the St Mike’s tournament on March 1-2, and the season will end with districts on March 6.
