Weyburn football player named to Team Canada for Women’s World Championship

Chantal Vogel currently plays for the Calgary Rage women's team, and will be heading to Finland this summer with Team Canada

WEYBURN – Football player Chantal Vogel of Weyburn has been named to Football Canada’s national team to compete in Finland at the IFAF Women’s World Championship this summer.

“I made Team Canada! I will be representing my country at the highest level of women’s football in Finland this summer,” she announced on her Facebook page.

Chantal is in her first year with the Calgary Rage, and said in an interview, “I am so beyond excited to be going. This is an opportunity that I’m lucky to have, and shows just how much the sport of women’s football has grown. Regardless of the outcome, I am using this as an opportunity to play against the best women in football from around the world, and to experience some of the best coaching in Canada.”

National Team Identification Camps began on May 6, with 136 athletes fighting for a spot on the Team Canada roster.

The 136-woman roster was then reduced to 81 as each athlete fought for their position on Team Canada’s final roster. These 81 athletes then competed in the Red White Game to close out the weekend in Ottawa.

The final top 45 players were chosen for Team Canada, with Vogel to play on the defensive line. She has been playing for the Calgary Rage this year, and has been playing football now for 12 years.

Team Canada will compete in the tournament along with defending champions Team USA, as well as teams from Finland, Mexico, Sweden, Australia, Germany and Great Britain.

The tournament will be held in Vantaa, Finland from July 28 to August 8.
