Weyburn Gold Wings win and lose to Prince Albert Bears

The Gold Wings won 3-1 on Sunday over the Bears, and were edged out 3-2 on Saturday

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings split their two home games over the weekend with the Prince Albert Bears, winning 3-1 on Sunday after being edged out 3-2 on Saturday.

In the win on Sunday, the Gold Wings scored once in each period, with Julianne Girardin scoring to tie the game after the Bears scored a powerplay goal. She was assisted by Randell Banga and Brooke Bassingthwaite.

Ashton Bender scored at 16 seconds into the second period on the powerplay, from Abigail Manz and Girardin to give the Gold Wings the lead.

The win was secured in the third with Girardin’s second goal, from Jenay Hyndman and Kaydance Ray at the eight-minute mark on the powerplay.

Amy Swayze was in net for the full game, saving 34 of the 35 shots that came her way.

On Saturday, the Bears opened the scoring in the first period on the powerplay, and there was no scoring in the second period.

Prince Albert went up 2-0 three minutes into the third, and then Ashton Bender of the Gold Wings scored on the powerplay at the midway point, assisted by Camryn Fuessel and Manz.

The Gold Wings tied the game late in the third, as Ray scored from Kiah Shields and Fuessel. The Bears won the game with a goal with three seconds to go.

Hailey Sibbald was in net for the full game, saving 24 of 27 shots.

The next game for the Gold Wings is Wednesday at Notre Dame at 8 p.m.
