Weyburn hosts CurlSask Barber Motors jr. curling event

Junior curlers in the U15 and U18 categories played in the CurlSask Barber Motors Junior Curling Tour bonspiel in Weyburn

WEYBURN – Junior curlers in the U15 and U18 categories played in the CurlSask Barber Motors Junior Curling Tour bonspiel on Friday and Saturday at the Weyburn Curling Rink, with a Weyburn rink winning gold in the U18 category.

The U15 teams played in a triple format, with each rink comprised of three players who took turns playing each position. There were teams from Oxbow, two from Weyburn and two from Kincaid who took part.

In the U18 category, playing with four members each, there was one Weyburn rink, one from Estevan, three from Regina and one from Gainsborough.

In the U15 event, the “Average Joes” rink of Weyburn was comprised of players Cale Porter, Laura Woodard and Sarah Woodard. The rink lost in the B final to Team Small Town Shooters, who went on to win the bronze.

The JKL rink from Weyburn included Kristin Loroff, Jyllian Payak and Lauryn Chicoine. They lost in the A semi-finals to the Ice Queens.

Team Haupstein was comprised of Karter Haupstein, Dylan Honig, Caden Schurko and Jyler Goebel, and was coached by Pam Haupstein.

In the gold medal game, versus Team Moulding of Regina, both teams went in with a record of four wins and one loss.

The Haupstein rink was up one with the hammer in the eighth end, and put the pressure on early with a draw by Goebel to the back button, behind Moulding’s guards.

Moulding responded by putting their shot rock at the top of the button, and Haupstein removed the shot rock with an angle double, missing the jam on his first shot.

Moulding made a draw to the button, but it was in the open. Schurko and Goebel swept the final shot hard to just miss the guard. It hit Moulding’s rock and stuck to win the game.
