Weyburn pitcher named Softball Sask Female Athlete of Year

Jorde Chartrand, attending UNC Greensboro, pitched for Team Canada and Team Saskatchewan over the summer

WEYBURN – Pitcher Jorde Chartrand of Weyburn was named the 2022 Female Athlete of the Year by Softball Sask, at the organization’s awards banquet on Saturday.

She began the 2022 season by being selected to attend the Senior Women’s national team camp, and selected to Team Canada.

She played in the Canada Cup, and attended the Women’s World Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

Jorde also played an integral on the 2022 Canada Games team, helping the team finish in fourth place overall.

Softball Sask said in their award presentation, “Jorde started five games at the Canada Games, including a complete game shutout to defeat B.C. in the round robin, and had a .357 batting average. Jorde has been the one to watch for Team Saskatchewan for many years. She showcased her skills as a right-handed pitcher above that of her peers at each camp she attended.”

Those attending the ceremonies were told that she was goal-oriented, dedicated, and self-motivated as she graduated from the Weyburn Comp during the COVID pandemic, and earned an athletic scholarship to play at Central Arkansas, recently transferring to UNC Greensboro.

“Jorde constantly demonstrates her love for the game of softball, and her desire to help her team succeed through her willingness to work hard independently, and by leading her peers in group settings,” said the bio about Jorde.

“Rarely do athletes have the opportunity and capacity to be part of a Canada Games team and their national team in the same summer, but Jorde managed both with grace and gratitude, displaying amazing work ethic and gives her best the best is needed.”

She was nominated for this award by Karen Thull.
