Weyburn Red Wings drop home-and-home vs Estevan

Red WIngs edged out 3-2 at home Saturday

WEYBURN - The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings dropped both games against their Highway 39 rivals, the Estevan Bruins, on Friday and Saturday.

They were trounced 8-0 in Estevan on Friday, and were edged out 3-2 on Saturday night at Crescent Point Place.

In the Friday night game, Jackson Fellner was in net for the full 60 minutes, saving 50 of the 58 shots, while Boston Bilous saved all 17 shots that came his way in the Bruins net.

The game was punctuated with penalties, including a match penalty and a game misconduct on Nick Dobson of the Red Wings for checking from behind, along with fighting and roughing penalties.

The game in Weyburn was a much closer match, as the teams were scoreless after the first period, and 2-1 for Estevan after the second period, with Nik Sombrowski scoring a short-handed goal, unassisted.

Captain Braden Birnie scored in the third period, assisted by Graham Skinner, on the powerplay to tie the game, but about four minutes later the Bruins got the winning goal.

Dazza Mitchell was in net for the Red Wings, saving 27 of 30 shots against him, while Cam Hrdlika of Estevan saved 25 of the 27 shots that went his way.

The Red Wings will next face the Hawks in Nipawin on Tuesday, Nov. 16, and they will travel to La Ronge on Thursday, Nov. 18 to face the Ice Wolves.

Weyburn will then be off for a week before hosting a home game against the Melfort Mustangs on Friday, Nov. 26, then the Battlefords North Stars on Saturday, Nov. 27.
