Weyburn Red Wings edge out Humboldt Broncos on home ice

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings edged out the visiting Humboldt Broncos on Friday night by a score of 5-4.

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings edged out the visiting Humboldt Broncos on Friday night by a score of 5-4.

The Red Wings led 2-0 at the end of the first period, and were up 4-2 at the end of the second as they brought home the win.

Ty Mason scored the first goal at 4:36 of the first period, assisted by Blake Norris and Matteo Turrin, then four minutes later Ethan Whillans stole the puck at the blueline and went in alone to score.

Humboldt got one back in the second, before the Red Wings’ Simon Pollock scored from Matthew Reidy to maintain the lead.

The Broncos answered two minutes later, and Weyburn scored with 22 seconds to go in the period, with Max Monette getting the goal on assists from Lucas Jeffreys and Pollock.

Humboldt scored at 12:27 of the third, but Mason got his second goal of the game, with assists from Eduard Wruck and Braigh LeGrandeur. The Broncos came close with a late-game score with one minute to go, but Weyburn held on for the win.

Both teams scored once on the powerplay

Boston Gelowitz was in net for Weyburn for the full game, saving 33 of the 37 shots that came his way.

Friday's game was also the KidSport game for the Red Wings, as KidSport had a table in the lobby to sell chuck-a-pucks and raffle tickets, and the team presented a donation of $1,400 to Weyburn's KidSport committee.
