Weyburn Red Wings post two wins over weekend

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had a successful weekend, posting a 6-2 win over Nipawin at home on Friday, and a 5-4 win over Yorkton.

WEYBURN – The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had a successful weekend of play, posting a 6-2 win over the Nipawin Hawks at home on Friday, and a 5-4 win over the Yorkton Terriers on the road on Saturday evening.

In the home win, team captain Max Monette scored a hattrick and an assist.

The scoring was opened by Jerome Maharaj unassisted only 45 seconds into the second period, which tied the score up at 1-1, followed by Monette’s first goal, assisted by Elijah Anderson and Jacob Visentini on the power play to give the Wings the lead.

The Hawks again tied the game, but Weyburn responded with four unanswered goals in the third period, the first by Monette a minute into the frame, assisted by Maharaj on the powerplay.

Lucas Jeffreys, in his first game back with the Wings after being reacquired during the week, scored, assisted by Monette and Maharaj, followed by Blake Betson, assisted by Tyler Teasdale and Nicholas Kovacs.

Monette then completed the hattrick with an assist by Jaxson Ruthven on the empty net, while short-handed.

Dazza Mitchell was in net for the full 60 minutes, making 30 saves on 32 shots.

On the road in Yorkton, the teams traded goals in the first period, with Monette getting the Red Wings goal from Maharaj and Ruthven, scoring only 17 seconds after the Terriers had scored.

Both teams scored twice each in the second period, with Weyburn’s goals coming from Max Henderson, assisted by Jeffreys and Wyatt LaCoste, and then Ruthven, assisted by Dallen Oxelgren and Monette.

Yorkton scored in the third, then the Red Wings scored twice to take the win. Kovacs scored, assisted by Ruthven, and Teasdale scored the winner while short-handed, assisted by Maharaj.

Mitchell was again in net for the full game, stopping 33 of the 37 shots made on goal.

Weyburn will host North Battleford on Thursday, Oct. 26, and again on Saturday, Oct. 28, both games at 7 p.m. The Thursday match will be the KidSport game for Weyburn.
