Weyburn Red Wings start regular season with win over Melville

WEYBURN - The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings started their regular season with a win, after defeating the Melville Millionaires 4-2 during a road game on September 16.

The Red Wings opened up scoring with two goals in the first period. Riley See scored at 8:27, assisted by Matthew Reidy. Kirk Mullen scored a power play goal at 18:30, assisted by Mathieu Gautier and Jakob Kalin.

Melville scored one goal in the second period to get on the board. Weyburn scored two more goals to extend their lead. Ethan Whillans scored at 17:06, assisted by Kalin and Simon Pollock. Mullen scored with no assistance at the 18:14 mark.

Melville was able to score one more goal in the third period.

Boston Gelowitz was in goal for the Red Wings, and stopped 32 out of 34 shots on net.

The Red Wings will be in Yorkton tonight, September 21, for another road game.

The home opener for the Red Wings will be against their Highway 39 rivals, the Estevan Bruins, on Friday, September 23 at Crescent Point Place.
