Weyburn Red Wings take two preseason wins over Estevan

The Red Wings won 2-1 on Saturday, and 5-4 on Monday, both by shootouts

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Red Wings played their Highway 39 rivals, the Estevan Bruins, twice over the Labour Day weekend and won both games, winning 2-1 on Saturday evening in Estevan, and 5-4 in a shootout in Weyburn on Monday night.

The Wings had two quick goals in the first period about a minute apart, with scoring by William Jasmin and Cooper Chisholm. The Bruins answered with a goal by Nathan Dann in the first period.

After Estevan briefly gained a 3-2 in the second period on goals from Sam McPeak and Mitch Kohner, Max Henderson tied the game, and in the third period, Lucas Jeffreys of Weyburn scored with a tie by Estevan’s Cody Davis, leading to the shootout.

Jasmin was the lone player out of six shooters who scored, giving the Wings the victory.

Weyburn’s net was guarded by Dazza Mitchell for the entire game and shootout period, while Cam Hrdlicka was in for 61 minutes, and Jackson Miller for nearly three minutes.

Saturday’s game was also decided by a shootout, with Aleko Sdrakas scoring in regular time for Weyburn, and Wyatt Sorken scored for the Bruins.

In the shootout Jasmin and Jackson Hassman scored for the Red Wings, and Aleksa Babic for the Bruins, giving the Wings the win.

Hrdlicka was the netminder for the whole game for Estevan, while the Wings had Drayden Ramage between the pipes.
