Weyburn U18 SE Goldwings win gold at Wickfest tourney

The Weyburn U18 Aaron Well Servicing Goldwings came home with the gold medal from Hayley Wickenheiser's female hockey tournament in Calgary.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn U18 Aaron Well Servicing Southeast Goldwings brought home the gold medal from Calgary, from the Wickfest tournament in their division.

Wickfest is the Hayley Wickenheiser International Women’s Hockey Festival.

The Goldwings girls first faced the Surrey Falcons Friday afternoon and took a close 2-1 loss, before facing the Lethbridge Southern Express for two games on Saturday.

The lone goal for Weyburn was by Brooke Allan, assisted by Jada Naviaux.

They won the first game 3-2 over Lethbridge, and then later that evening came away with a 4-1 win.

In the first win, goals were by Katelyn Thackeray, with assists by Victoria Mann and Naviaux, and Talyn Johnston scored twice, with assists by Bostyn Runge on both goals.

In the evening win, Thackeray scored twice and assisted on another, with Hadley Gerle and Megan Reid each scoring once. The other assists came from Samantha Colpitts, Naviaux, Allan and Runge.

Their last game of the round robin was versus the Abbotsford Ice on Sunday, and they took a 1-0 loss.

The girls finished second in their pool, and were set to face the Surrey Falcons in the final, winning 4-1 to claim gold for their division.

Mann had two goals, and Gerle and Brooke McKinnon each scored once, with assists by Naviaux and Reid.

During the tournament, the girls had a sports nutrition class, and had a surprise visit by Hayley Wickenheiser. They also took a trip out to Banff on Friday after their afternoon game.
