WEYBURN – All three of Weyburn Minor Football’s teams were busy over the weekend, with the U14 and U12 teams on the road, and U10 team was at home to host a jamboree on Sunday morning.
The U14 Young Fellow Falcons defeated the Swift Current Steelers 23-0 in their road game on Saturday.
Coach Johnson said, “It feels good to shut out the team that ended our season last year and went on to win the championship.”
He added the Falcons “played a very physical game on both sides of the ball. Defence kept us in the game early with a pick-six that started our scoring. Offence was able to control the ball in the second half and score several key points.”
The next game for the Falcons will be their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. against the Estevan Oilers.
The Weyburn U12 Ravens traveled to Swift Current for their third game of the season. The boys fought hard and played a much closer game than the score suggests.
The Ravens fell 26-2 but played hard and the coaches were very happy with the progress the team is making.
Zaven Travis completed three of seven passes for 14 yards. Landon Leroux rushed 27 times for 159 yards. Judd Venard rushed 13 times for 62 yards.
On defence, Hudson Lawrence led the way with 10 tackles and was a major menace in the backfield. Owen Abtosway had 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
Cale Porter had four tackles including one that resulted in a safety. Kai Clark had four tackles and a sack.
The boys will be back to practice on Tuesday and travel to Estevan this coming Sept. 22 weekend for a clash with the Chargers.
Meanwhile, the U10 Apex Cardinals hosted two teams for a jamboree on Sunday at the Weyburn Minor Football field.
They hosted the Estevan Cudas and the Moose Jaw Razorbacks, as their coaches guided them through game situations and plays.
