The Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins traded hometown losses during a home and home road trip this past weekend. Ironically they were 5-2 scores in both games.
Saturday night the Bruins came to Crescent Point Place Arena for some payback but it took until the 3:10 mark of the second period before Cole Olson of the Bruins would open the scoring on a powerplay drive.
Bruins' Caider Neufeld put their second marker up on the board at the 9:07 mark of the second period to give the Estevan club a 2-0 lead to this point.
Weyburn finally found the back of Shea Cooper's net at the 12:04 mark of the second period when Jesse Ross with help from Coltyn Sanderson and TJ Wees made it a 2-1 contest.
Just under two minutes later the Wings scored on the powerplay when Bruce Keegan capitalized on the man-advantage with help from Brent Becker and Drew George.
But that's as far as the Wings could go Saturday night, as the Bruins would add one more goal by Jole Kot in the second period for what would end up being the game-winning goal.
Estevan would score during their own powerplay drive in the final period when Jonathon Ceci would put the game out of reach at the 13:12 mark.
With the Wings desperately pressing and Mitch Kilgore out of the net in favour of an extra attacker Estevan's Mark Cross would add an empty-netter to seal the Wings' fate and a 5-2 loss to the Bruins.
Powerplay key to Wings 5-2 win in Estevan
Weyburn's success Friday night was due in part to an effective powerplay, which helped the Wings score three of their five goals with the man-advantage.
Estevan's Troy Hunter opened the scoring in Estevan at the 7:49 mark of the opening period, but Weyburn's TJ Wees would answer back at the 15:40 mark of the same period with help from Bruce Keegan and Brock Appleyard to even the scoring.
Estevan's Jonathon Ceci would help regain the slim lead when he would take advantage on a powerplay of their own to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Weyburn would erupt in the third period with four unanswered goals of their own when Keegan would score on the powerplay with help from Drew George at the 10:05 mark to even the score.
While Estevan was still licking their wounds and sitting a man short in the penalty box Lucas Ulmer, along with Sanderson and Ross, scored what would eventually become the game-winning goal at the 10:36 mark of the third period.
Wing's Scott Kirkham would add the Weyburn team's fourth goal at the 17:42 mark of the final period with help from Cole Klippenstein and Keegan.
In a desperation move by the Bruins they had pulled netminder Joel Danyluk from their net in favour of an extra attacker, but it would be Jesse Ross along with Tanner McCall for Weyburn who would come up with the puck and deposit it into the Bruins' empty net to make it a 5-2 Wings' victory over their rivals from Estevan in front of their home crowd.
The Wings will have had five days off to heal any nagging injuries and will now face Melville Friday, February 18th at 7:30 p.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday, February 20 at 6 p.m. at Crescent Point Place. These will be the Wings final two regular season games of the 2010/11 season and the teams will be gearing up for the upcoming playoffs.
