Despite the bitterly cold weather outside the Weyburn Red Wings are starting to heat things up in their race to the playoffs in the New Year.
The Wings came up to their Christmas break with two solid wins against the Melville Millionaires and the first place Yorkton Terriers.
Friday's game against the Millionaires really needed only the first period to declare the Wings' winners as they picked up three goals in the opening period. Their first goal came from Drew George with helpers being awarded to Dylan Coupal and Lucas Ulmer at the 12:55 mark.
Then Brock Appleyard scored his first of three goals with the help of Jesse Koss and George at the 14:29 mark of the first period. Koss would get what would be the Wings' winning goal to close out the first period with the Wings ahead by a score of 3-1.
Appleyard's powerplay goal was the only goal scored during the second period with assists going to his line-mates Koss and George.
Melville would score their last goal of the evening but it would be too little, too late, as Weyburn would continue to dominate the hapless Millionaires.
The three-some of Appleyard, Koss and George would once again light the lamp midway through the final period on the powerplay, which would increase their firm grip on the contest.
Weyburn's A.P. player, Clint Pirid would put the sixth and final goal of the evening behind the Melville goaltender with help from Keegan Bruce and Coupal to give the hometown team a 6-2 advantage.
Wings tame Terriers
In another game which the Wings only needed the first period to notch another win on their belt came Saturday night when the Yorkton Terriers came to town in the hopes of stealing a victory out of Crescent Point Place Arena.
Weyburn's Shawn Cowie along with T.J. Wees and Appleyard would strike first in the first period much to the delight of the hometown crowd.
It would be fellow Wing, Rodney Cowie who would score the game winning goal at the 15:10 mark of the opening period with help from brother Shawn and Appleyard.
Yorkton's Justin Lamontague would score the Terriers only goal near the end of the first period but again, it would be too little, too late for the opposing team.
Both teams traded quality-scoring chances but the netminders Mitch Kilgore of Weyburn and Warren Shymko of Yorkton would turn the remainder of the game into a goaltenders duel. Neither goalie would blink again for the remainder of the contest, and it would remain a 2-1 game in Weyburn's favour.
The Wings will now have the Christmas break off but on December 31st, the team will travel to Estevan in the annual home and home New Year's match-up. The Bruins will then travel to Weyburn for a 3 p.m. contest on New Year's Day. Weyburn will then return to Estevan to play their arch rivals the Bruins again on Sunday, January 2 at 6 p.m.
