Wings hit stride at right time for playoffs

The Wings have shown their fans that despite a major defection late in the season that they still have a few tricks up their collective sleeves. The Notre Dame Hounds came to town Sunday, February 20 to try to inflict some pain just before the beginning of the 2010-11 playoffs.

But this would not be the case and Weyburn had four of its five goals scored by special lines. The Wings' first goal was scored shorthanded by Drew George and assisted by Taylor Desserre and Tanner McCall near the end of the first period.

The second period scoring by the Wings was fast and furious as they took advantage of the powerplay at the 1:48 minute mark when Jesse Ross found the back of the Hounds net with help from Lucas Ulmer and Coltyn Sanderson. Less than a minute later Scott Kirkham increased the Wings' lead by scoring yet another powerplay goal with help from Bruce Keegan and George.

Midway through the second period Weyburn's Clint Pirio scored the Weyburn's only even strength goal at the 19:46 mark with help from Ross to widen their 4-2 score going into the final period.

But as fate has a way of assisting the Hounds they would score their third goal at the seven-minute mark to bring the Notre Dame team to within one goal of tying the contest. But Weyburn's netminder Mitch Kilgore would face 12 shots in the final period and would turn the rest of them away from his crease.

With less than a minute remaining in the game Notre Dame would pull their netminder, Russell Abbott in favour of an extra attacker. Fate was a fickle lady this day and it would be Weyburn's Brock Appleyard sealing the contest with a empty net goal with some help from TJ Wees and Sanderson at the 19:08 mark in front of 1011 cheering fans.

Powerplay helps dominate over Millionaires

Melville is just one of those teams that seems to give the Wings fits but it would be the powerplay strength of Weyburn that made the difference when needed.

The Millionaires would strike first during the Friday, February 18 contest but it would be the Wings who would come out on top.

Weyburn would even up the game at one-all at the 6:13 mark of the opening period when Kirkham would find the back of the Millionaires net with help from George and Keegan.

Weyburn would dominate once again in the second period when Keegan along with Kyle Vogal and Brentt Becker would get the go-ahead goal at the 7:29 minute mark of the middle period. Just over a minute later Cole Klippenstein would add to the Wings' slim lead with help from Desserre and Braden Kmita to make it a 3-1 game going into the final period.

Melville would give the Wings and their fans some concerns, as they would open the third period with a goal at the 46-second mark of the period. To make matters worse the "money-men" would add another goal on a powerplay at the 12:41 mark of the period to add some extra drama to the contest. It would be Kilgore for Weyburn who would stand tall in the Wings' net and not allow any more shots past him to seal the slim one goal lead and a Wings' 4-3 victory.
