A very great privilege

My Nikkel's Worth column

This was the group of incredible individuals I was a part of, at the presentation of the QE Platinum Jubilee Medals on Jan. 17, at the Weyburn Legion Hall.

WEYBURN – It was sort of surreal to be part of a large group of Weyburn and area residents who were honoured with the presentation of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee medal – but it was a great honour, and a real privilege to be part of that ceremony.

When I was informed by our MLA, Dustin Duncan, that there would be a ceremony for the presentation of medals on Jan. 17, he really threw me for a loop when he then told me someone else would have to cover it, because I would be receiving one of the medals.

There was shocked silence when he told me that – I had not contemplated the possibility I would be part of this group.

I figured there would be others being accorded this honour, but I had no idea it would be such a large group of recipients.

I was, and am, truly humbled that I was included in this ceremony, and so many worthy recipients also received medals, from volunteers to educators to lawyers to the police – and you know what? This tells me what I’ve always known, that Weyburn and area is home to many, many amazing, talented and incredible people.

For myself, I was cited for my contributions in the field of communications as a member of the local media.

I can say it’s been a privilege to be such, as I’ve had a front-row seat to many, many fun, incredible events, meeting all sorts of great people, both young and mature, and taking in the unfolding history of the community.

I’ve met and talked to many people I would never have otherwise encountered, like premiers, mayors, performers, award winners and even a Hollywood actor (Kiefer Sutherland).

I’ve been able to enjoy photography to the full, taking shots of lightning, or of remarkable young people, sports games, harvest time, and sad things like the demolition of many historic buildings.

It’s hard to encapsulate all of this except to say I’ve greatly enjoyed meeting and writing about so many people, events, causes and issues, and hope I can continue to do this, to fill the pages of the Review and This Week and the website/Facebook page for this outlet. For the other recipients, I know they will also continue to make great contributions to the community of Weyburn and area.
